How to Use a Goal Planner to Follow Through

This is Your Year! Grab it!

In 2011 around the end of the year, I claimed 2012 as my year. I declared that it would be my year to travel more, meet more people, invest more, which I did through my Betterment account, earn more money and live a life filled with happiness and abundance. I promised myself to let go of anything that was holding me back or holding me down and be more loving and open to new experiences. That served me very well as 2012 was one of the best years of my life. For 2013 I have a more strategic plan and I think you should have one too. This has nothing to do with SMART goals. I’m sure you’ve heard about those. Set a goal that is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time sensitive. I believe in SMART goals and I think they are a great place for beginner goal setters to start. But once you’ve been setting SMART goals for a few years, you realize that you might need just a little bit of a bigger push to reach your goals. Mainly because, as you begin to achieve success in all areas of your life, you want more and you are willing to work to get there. Let’s take a look at what you can do if you’re ready to claim 2013 and make a strategic push to do more.

Need Some Motivation?

You may not know, but in 2012 the world lost a hero. Zig Ziglar passed away in November 2012, but his legacy lives on. Zig Ziglar was a master of sales, a motivational speaker, a writer, an educator and so much more. If you’ve ever heard one of his lectures then you know how hearing him speak makes you want to get up and take action! Here are three of my favorite Zig Ziglar quotes.

“People often say motivation doesn’t last. Neither does bathing—that’s why we recommend it daily.”

“If you want to reach a goal, you must “see the reaching” in your own mind before you actually arrive at your goal.”

“You were born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win.”

Zig Ziglar has an amazing tool that can help you maintain your motivation to achieve all that you want in life. It’s called the Performance Planner. A friend introduced me to this planner. He mentioned it as one of the keys to his success. I immediately searched Amazon so I could find a copy for myself. The most recent edition has been updated by Seth Godin but the essence of the planner is Zig Ziglar all the way.

How to Use the Planner to Reach Your Goals

When you first open the planner and get started you will be highly motivated, but the key is not to start with a rush of passion that dies off. You want to slowly write out your goals and see yourself accomplishing them with the discipline that it will require. You must also surround yourself with people who will support you all the way. For 12 weeks, you will track your progress towards your goals. Each day you have to keep up with what you did to achieve the goals you have set. In this updated planner, you commit to keeping up with 4 goals. If you did nothing that day to put yourself closer to achieving one of your goals then you write ‘NOTHING’ with a red pen. At the end of the 12 weeks, you will be able to see how your effort influenced your success.

I love this because it helps keep you accountable. Most people can set goals for themselves in their mind but if they don;t have a clear plan and be able to see it on paper it can get away from them.

Exactly! Especially when most goals have to be reached little by little. It’s really the small wins that get you where you want to be.

The planner sounds like a great tool LaTisha – I’m still working on those ‘SMART’ goals but will definitely take a look at the planner. Thanks for the great info.

It’s helping me already. I really hate writing ‘nothing’ on those goals that I know I want to reach. It really helps to keep me accountable.
